Myth vs. Fact: The Menopause Years
I have loved all the recent openness about menopause - all women will go through it, and we should be talking about it more! That’s why I wanted to share some myths that women should be aware of when it comes to the topic of menopause. I hope these insights help you navigate this time in life!
Myth: Menopause just suddenly happens. This isn’t true! There are stages to menopause, including perimenopause which begins usually in your late 30s or early 40s and can last 10 years; menopause which is when you haven't had your period for 12 months; and postmenopause - all your glorious years after. Common symptoms such as sleep disruptions and hot flashes can begin years before you officially hit menopause, that is why it is so important to talk with your doctor and be strong about creating a treatment plan for any symptoms you may be experiencing - regardless of what stage you are in.
Myth: You will gain weight when you hit menopause. Also not true… Yes your metabolism will slow down due to hormone shifts, but you can stave off weight gain. Create a plan for staying active, eating right, and managing your stress, and you can work towards maintaining a healthy weight. This is why I designed my Vitality For Life Program for women in any menopause phase - it includes workouts, a meal plan, and well-being sessions to help you stay fit, active, healthy and positive!
Myth: Everyone will get hot flashes, and they will be awful. While many women experience similar symptoms, what happens to you in your menopause journey will be unique to you! Whether that is hot flashes, mood swings or brain fog, you are you. Again, another reason to talk with your doctor and create a personalized plan!
Myth: You will lose muscle after menopause and never gain it back. I know for a fact this is not true - I have maintained and gained strong muscle in my post-menopause years! Yes, muscle loss can happen with age, but a combination of a protein-rich diet, strength/resistance training and daily movement can help you build your muscle. That is why it is so vital to keep moving, and keep lifting those weights!
I hope this advice helps, and for more menopause info, keep your eyes on your inbox for an exciting new reveal coming your way soon - I am so excited about it!!!
