Embracing Aging After 50: Travel Tips!
Taste, but don't overeat. I never pass up the opportunity to try out new or delicious looking foods when I travel - that's one of the best parts of new places! I have found the following to be helpful when it comes to not overeating. One, I always have a healthy snack on hand to tide me over as we are sightseeing. A piece of fruit or some nuts are great, portable options. Next, I share plates when I am traveling with others. That way you can try plenty of things, but are taking a few bites, and not "responsible" for the entire plate. Finally, when I am traveling solo, I order an appetizer or two. That way I can try different things without feeling too full. (And always ask the server for what they recommend, so you can taste the local specialties!)
Keeping fit. I always bring a portable workout item that I can use in my hotel room, like my Stability Ball and Resistance Bands (both are 50% now - use code BB50 - through June 10th!). That way if the weather is bad or the hotel doesn't have a gym, I can dedicate 20 or 30 minutes to doing something good for my body right there in the room. I also swap out more traditional workouts like a cardio dance class for walking. There's nothing better than getting in your steps while you are sightseeing - a win-win for the body and mind! Finally, I am forgiving with myself if my routine isn't exactly right every day... it's vacation, so enjoy it and do your best!
Traveling solo. Mostly I am traveling with family and friends, but when I have a business trip or am solo, I like to research a great restaurant to try out near where I am staying. Sit at the bar, enjoy your food, and people watch! I also like to find a popular walking area or even a new workout class to try out, to keep things interesting while still being around others. Finally, I treat myself to a good book to read on the plane, a little luxury that goes a long way!
And when it comes to travel overall, my three must-haves when traveling are a lightweight but warm shawl to ward of chilly planes (and double as an evening cover up!); extra-rich face cream that I slather on for the flight to help keep my skin dewy and fresh; and my previously mentioned healthy snacks. (Plus, I drink way more water than I think I need, to help stay hydrated and energized!)
Wherever you are headed, enjoy! Travel can be so rewarding, and with a little preparation (and some patience!), you WILL create memories that last a lifetime!
Let's stay FIT, HAPPY and HEALTHY - Together!!
